More About Permo Chim Crystal
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS Q.1 What is PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL? A.1 It is a waterproofing mortar containing high quality cement, silica and various chemicals which are activated by moisture. When the chemical additives react with the free lime found in the concrete, they permeate deep into the concrete and form water-insoluble crystals in the capillar cracks and pores, and thus providing a very durable insulation that will be effective for years. These crystals provide a perfect insulation by eliminating capillar water transmission, but they do not block the transmission of air and water vapour, thus allowing breathability. The extent of crystal formation and permeability depends on the density of the concrete and absorption of the surface. Q.2 What are the advantages of PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL? A.2 - With perfect bonding to the structure it is applied, it provides a seamless, durable waterproofing resistant to abrasion as well as to the formation of tears and holes. - Protects reinforcements bars and concrete against abrasive effects of water. - Protective insoluble crystal formation restarts each time it is exposed to water and in this way it provides a very durable insulation that will be effective for years. - As a non-toxic material it can be safely used in water tanks. - Spreading dry PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL is an easy-to-apply and effective method to solve waterproofing problems in horizontal construction joints. - PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL is effective against water pressure in the direction of the application surface (positive water pressure) as well as in the opposite direction (negative water pressure). Q.3 What are the “Positive Side” usage areas of PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL? A.3 - Concrete water tanks - Cisterns - Swimming pools - Dams - Concrete pipes - Galleries, drainage and water channels - Foundations, retaining walls and shear walls - Waterproofing the inside of concrete planter boxes in the balconies Q.4 What are the “Negative Side” usage areas of PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL? A.4 - Waterproofing water tanks from outside - Waterproofing basement walls from inside - Foundations - Tunnels - Retaining Walls - Elevator Shafts - Horizontal construction joints Q.5 How is the surface prepared for PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL application? A.5 - The surface to be treated must be completely free from water repellent materials such as dust, grease, paint residues, curing materials and silicon. - Any weak parts of the concrete must be repaired, any loose mortar must be cleared out, and the surface must be levelled and strengthened. - Any cracks found on the surface must be cleaned and repaired with repair mortar. - If the surface is dry, it must be saturated with plenty of water prior to application, and kept moisturized during application. Q.6 How are the surface cracks repaired before PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL application? A.6 - Any cracks found in the static, or non-moving parts of the building must be first cleaned and moisturized, and then repaired with Emulzer Latex added plaster, or with any repair mortar. - Any dynamic, or moving cracks must be insulated with elastic joint fillers applied onto moving joints. Q.7 What are the application methods of PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL? A.7 - Depending on the characteristics of the surface to be applied, PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL can be used with 4 methods: 1- Dry Spread: In cold joint applications on horizontal surfaces PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL is directly spread in powder form. When the groundwater level is high, it can be applied onto the surface of floor concrete in powder form prior to the placement of levelling concrete. 2- PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL Grout: To prepare PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL grout, 1 unit of water is mixed with 2,25-2.5 units of powder PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL. In these applications water must be added to PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL; never vice versa. In cold joint applications on vertical surfaces, it is recommended to use PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL in grout form. It can be used for waterproofing the whole surface as well as the holes providing water flow. 3- PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL Plaster: 1 unit of PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL is mixed with 2 units of sand, and then water is added and mixed to the trowelling consistency. To plug leaking holes, and on very aged concrete, brick or briquette walls, a 5-10 mm thick coat of PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL plaster application is recommended instead of a second coat of PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL grout. 4- PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL Plugging Mortar: 3-4 units of powder PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL is mixed with 1 unit of EMULZER SPEED-X LIQUID to plug the holes. Because the setting period of this mixture is very short, it must be prepared in small amounts, mixed thoroughly and applied fast. Q.8 How should PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL be applied to plug leaking holes? A.8 - To decrease water pressure, the holes are deepened enough to provide easy water flow by using a drill. - If there are more than one leakage points, more holes big enough to allow easy water flow are drilled on the lower parts of the wall. - A thin plastic pipe is fixed into the hole by using plugging mortar, and in this way all the water flow is directed into these pipes. - After having cleaned the holes thoroughly, PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL grout is applied into the holes in one coat. - The hole is completely plastered with PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL plaster (all around the plastic pipe) when the PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL grout is still wet. The curing period will be 24 hours. -After having completed the waterproofing application of the surface except the holes, the pipe is removed and the remaining hole is plugged with EMULZER SPEED-X POWDER which is a perfect accelarated setting powder. - The plugging mortar is pressed manually for about 1-2 minutes until it solidifies. - When PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL mortar is cured, the insulation is completed by applying PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL grout both into and arond the hole. Q.9 What is the application method of PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL grout? A.9 - The surface to be treated must be moisturized. - PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL grout prepared as instructed must be applied in one coat by using a brush. Second coat must be applied approximately 3-4 hours later depending on the air temperature, or as the first coat starts to solidify, but before it dries up. And it must be applied perpendicular to the first coat. Q.10 How long does it take to provide a complete waterproofing with PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL? A.10 - Generally 7 days after the application. After the application it is critical to prevent Permo Chim Crystal from drying fast, it must be kept damp for 5–7 days. As in normal curing, this can be achieved by laying damp burlap, or spraying water. And Permo Chim Crystal must be protected from sun, freeze, wind and other undesirable weather conditions during the curing period. Q.11 Are curing materials compatible with PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL? A.11 - No. Curing materials should not be applied onto the surfaces treated with PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL, and if there is any curing material on the surface to be treated with PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL, it must be completely cleared out. Q.12 Should the concrete to be treated with PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL complete its curing period first? A.12 - No, watercuring required for PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL provides the concrete with the necessary hidratation as well, so PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL can be applied just after the removal of forms. Q.13 When should the water storage tanks be filled with water after the application of PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL? A.13 - Because water pressure accelerates the formation and permeation of crystals, water storage tanks can be filled with water 24 hours after the application of PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL. Q.14 Is it possible to apply anything else onto a PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL applied surface? A.14 - Yes. Q.15 Can we paint a PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL applied surface? A.15 -No, to be able to paint such a surface, firstly plaster must be applied onto PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL when it is still wet, and paint must be applied onto this plaster layer. Q.16 Can PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL be directly applied onto briquette? A.16 -Yes, but it is recommended to apply a 5-10 mm thick coat of PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL plaster instead of a second coat of PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL grout. Q.17 Can PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL be directly applied onto brick wall? A.17 -No. Because bricks don’t contain any cement, applying PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL does not work. PERMO STOP or EMULZER F added plaster must be applied onto cement-free surfaces. The thickness of the plaster must be 4-5 cm. minimum. Q.18 Is it possible to apply faience or ceramic onto PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL applied surfaces? A.18 -Yes, but a faience adhesive should be applied directly onto newly applied Permo Chim Crystal. If this type of materials will be applied onto cured PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL, the crystals which remain on the surface must be wiped off by using hydro chloric acid diluted wih water, and then the surface must be plastered. Q.19 Doesn’t cleaning the surface by using hydro chloric acid diluted wih water spoil the structure of PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL? A.19 -No, PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL grout serves as an agent to transmit crystals deeper into the surface, so cleaning the surface does not at all affect the waterproofing characteristic of PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL. Q.20 What are the recommended amounts to be consumed? A.20 1- Dry Spread: 1 kg/m² 2- PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL Grout: At negative water pressure the total consumption is 2 kg/m² in 2 coats At positive water pressure the total consumption is 1-2 kg/m² in 2 coats 3-PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL Plaster: 2-3 kg/m² for 5 mm thick plaster Q.21 Can PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL be used inside chemical substance storage tanks? A.21 -No, PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL is designed for WATERproofing. But it can be used against highly salty water as well (such as sea water). Q.22 Is PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL harmful for skin? A.22 -It should not contact with skin, eyes, and mouth. It may be harmful for sensitive skin. It is recommended to use protective gloves during application. Q.23 What is the storage life of PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL? A.23 -12 months in a dry place; preferably maximum 10 rows must be stacked on the pallet. Q.24 Can PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL be applied at low temperatures? A.24 -Like all the cement-based products, PERMO CHIM CRYSTAL must be applied at temperatures between +5°C and + 35°C. Q.25 What happens if we add water to solidified mixture, or dilute and mix it with the drill? A.25 The mixture will be diluted, but it should not be used, because with the cement reaction having already started, it will be no more adhesive enough, and result in cleavage.
